"If you are enlightened, then everyday life flows in harmony with the truth. You will live a simple life: when you're thirsty, you drink; when you're hungry, you eat. But people in this world are always looking for something special, even though there is nothing mystical about truth itself. If you realize the truth, you will live in bliss every day. There will be nothing more special than drinking tea when you're thirsty, resting when you're tired, or greeting guests when they visit. These everyday acts will be enough."

Today's Dharma Talk
- This coming September 15, the tenth year since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, we will open “The Ganhwa Seon and World Peace Assembly” at Riverside Church next to Union Seminary in New York. We will also announce “Peace Message for the World” together.
- When your mind is confused, deluded, the six paths appear to exist, however if you see the nature of the mind, you will find they do not.
- Wisdom will not brighten without practice, fortune does not come without good deeds. Develop your wisdom through Seon and you will have a good life in every rebirth.
- Our practice of Seon is not a matter of sitting still like a tree or stone, rather it depends on your hwadu that comes from your very heart.
- You must do your job. Your true job is not raising children, making money, or having a successful career. It is finding your True self.
- When it comes to keeping your hwadu you must make a 100% effort. If you only make 80% effort then delusion will arise in the remaining 20%.
- With our basic food and shelter, there is no reason to waste your precious time pursuing money and fame. Most urgent thing in your life is Hwadu practice.
- You won’t get rich by merely not spending. If you do good things, this will prevent misfortune which truly will cost a lot of money.
- Life is empty without hwadu practice. Act with your body but always keep your hwadu in your thoughts.
- You must wrestle with your hwadu, “what is my True Self?” Whenever confusion or delusion comes, bring up the hwadu again, “Before I was born, what is my True Self?”
- You must do your job. Your true job is not raising children, making money, or having a successful career. It is finding your True self.
- The religion which can’t keep up with science will disappear in the future.
- Just as our life has birth, old age, sickness, and death, the universe also is formed, exists, declines, and returns to emptiness before starting over again. If you would avoid disasters and suffering then while you are diligent in your practice to awaken to True Self you should perform good works. This will erase bad karma, and you will be able to avoid harm even if disasters do occur.
- Buddha treats everyone equally without preference. Buddha wants to give everything to us, but we can only receive as much as the cup of our mind will allow.
- In order to start “True Question” you must make an effort to bring up your hwadu 1,000 times, or 10,000 times a day. Once it does start however, this one “True Question” will continue unbroken day and night, like the sound of a running stream. As this one thought, the “True Question” continues to flow unbroken, suddenly one minute you will see or hear something and your hwadu will break open.
- Making an offering to meditators is the best and quickest way to build karma in order to enlighten to True Self.
- Don’t do any wrongdoing for the benefit of your children. They have their own fortune. If you do, you will have to face retribution.
- One who knows the Truth overcomes difficulties, the one who does not know it is overcome by difficulties.
- Fortune comes from the small things. Live with pleasant, thankful mind. Complaint and dissatisfaction brings misfortune.
- Why do we meditate? First of all, it is to find our True Self and be freed from the fetters of birth and death. Second, it is to develop the wisdom that will allow us to enjoy happiness and fortune in our present and future lives.
- The true practitioner never loses one thought of their hwadu during their daily life.
- Don’t insist that only you are right. Originally there is no right and wrong.
- We live in greed, pleasure, endless frustration and wrongdoing believing that “Life comes to an end with death.” However Buddhism teaches that past, present and the future is always connected.
- Practitioners should remain unmoving, regardless of praise or insult. To keep one’s mind calm always is the correct attitude of a meditator.
